I thought the speech delivered by Hillary Clinton last night was sufficient to serve the purpose of uniting her supporters with the rest of the democratic team to rally around Barack Obama as the President. So that is not my question. Something else came to mind as I watched Hillary deliver this powerful and well put together speech.
I watched Hillary give a speech riddled with ideas of feminism and "gender power". I recalled that Hillary often gave speeches focusing on how historic her campaign was because she is indeed a woman. Furthermore, Hillary's justification for being placed on the role call at the convention was due to the fact that her campaign was so historic due to her gender. I do not argue against the fact that her campaign was historic because she has done what other women in the past have been unable to do. I believe that should be celebrated. My issue is that it appears ok for Hillary to scream from the mountain tops "I am woman here me roar!" but every time Barack Obama acknowledges the fact that he is indeed black, he is accused of playing the race card. So much so that I am afraid that tomorrow night on a historical night in Black History (he will give this speech on the 45 year anniversary of Dr. King giving his "I Have a Dream" speech), Barack will feel compelled to down play that moment in history. That makes me really sad because this is moment to be celebrated by ALL Americans and a particular historic turning point for people of color. I would hate to see that moment go unacknowledged by the very man who is blazing this historic trail.
So my question today is this, is the country ok with the possibility of electing a Black man as long as he (or others around him) don't talk about the fact that he is black? Please, please let me know if I am missing something here. ( And before you say it, I know everyone can see that he is Black, but saying it and acknowledging its history is very different)
*My apologies to those who didnt see the speech and/or those who dont care about the DNC, I am obsessed so please excuse me!*
