Thought of the Day - February 28, 2012

From someone who knew how to be civil - Stephen Carter

"We must listen to others with knowledge of the possibility that they are right and we are wrong."

If you go into a conversation already deciding the other person is wrong on you are right, you lack the ability to listen. Rather all you are doing is waiting for your chance to speak and likely your chance to inundate the other person with your list of reasons they are wrong.  You sit and run the list through your head waiting for the pause in speech so you can jump in and be right.  In that moment you are incapable of listening.  In that moment you are deafened by the sound of your own righteousness.  And in that moment you may miss out on the chance to hear a much needed truth, one that could really and truly set you free.

Have a pleasant day!
