What was displayed last night leaves little room in my head for any thoughts today. What I witnessed last night was a party hell bent on assassinating Barack Obama's legitimacy as a candidate. The most peculiar part of it was those who the character and resume attacks were coming from. We have three former candidates who all bashed John McCain in the primaries standing by him. Two of them (Huckabee and Romney) took direct and low shots at Barack Obama's historic achievement as the nominee of his party, arguing that while it was historic, the presidency isn't about historic symbolism. The third, Rudy Guiliani, who as a former mayor of NYC turned the NYPD into a lynch mob whose main goal was to harass, abuse and shoot ordinary citizens in order to establish law and order, came out throwing jabs left and right. The most insulting thing was his low class, condescending mockery of Obama's time as a community organizer and the pause so the entire audience could laugh hysterically. Some how I missed the joke. Sarah Palin followed up this hurl of insults and elevated the punches to heights not seen since the Democratic primaries. This former mayor and Governor actually believes that her political experience exceeds Obama. She is a self described pit bull and much like a pit bull, she attacked viciously without provocation. That is to be expected. What should also be expected is that she be jumped on like wild dog. With all the scandal buried one layer deep with her administration in Alaska, the democrats should be preparing to rain down a storm on her in the next few weeks and at the debate that will make her rethink her choice for this job. Leaving out her personal family issues, there is enough evidence of abuse of power and shady business deals with campaign contributors to eat this woman alive. She lacks national and foreign policy experience in such great dimensions that democrats can ride that all the way to the white house. Obama and his team can continue to make this election about big things like the economy, health care, jobs and gas prices. They can leave the judgement of this small time mayor with her teen unwed pregnant daughter to the rest of us. We can judge this woman for being unable to run her household of 7. We can judge her for using her son going to Iraq and her other son with special needs when its convenient for her but asking that we back off her pregnant unwed 17 yr old daughter. Leave the rest of us to be annoyed by this woman who made the CHOICE to have 5 children and her daughter who is making the CHOICE to have her baby, but holds the position that even in the case of rape or incest, abortion should not be a CHOICE for you and I! How hypocritical is that? I want nothing to do with a woman like this in office. And speaking of women, while I was a critic of Hillary Clinton for many reasons, I will never deny the historic nature of her campaign and how it serves as an inspiration to the millions of people who support her. As a woman, I am insulted that the republicans would think that simply putting A woman in the slot would motivate and inspire women to vote for the ticket. The only thing more insulting would have been to put A black guy on the ticket to get the black vote. So my thought of today is one of anger and annoyance. It is also a thought of fear. I am afraid that the display shown last night could possibly be running this country for another 4 years. I don't know about you but this is a SERIOUS election, the most serious of my life and of our generation. We are living in some extremely rough times and the cure to this is HOPE. And contrary to what Sarah Palin said, there is a need for hope in running this country. If as a voter, I can not HOPE and DREAM of change in the way things are going, then what is the purpose. Every single movement in this country was created on the back of someones dream, a group with some hope and pure old fashioned determination to move beyond the current situation. I wouldn't have the right to vote if it wasn't for the dreams of some people who lived long long before me. So I will NOT let Sarah Palin, John McCain and the rest of the republicans take away my hopes and dreams. I am so invested in this election that I pray every night for Barack and his family. Mainly my prayer is for their safety, but it is also for his victory in this election. Because we just CAN NOT live another 4 years like this. The republican party has a limited view of the world and clearly are limited in diversity as shown in the sea of white faces at the convention last night. But as the McCain campaign manager said, he isn't going for the Black vote because that is one Barack has nailed. WOW, well that scares me even more if this man is elected because he isn't even courting my vote so he damn sure dont care about my life and my issues if he is elected!
To all of you, I hope you are registered to vote. If you are not, the deadlines for registration are fast approaching so get that done. If you know anyone who isn't registered and is eligible, dont hesitate to help them get registered. EVERY vote is needed in this election. Call up your cousins, aunts and uncles who live across this country and ask if are they registered. Be pushy, because at this point we cant afford not to.
If anyone is interested in getting people in Jamaica, NY registered to vote, I am trying to create a team for a Saturday morning outreach! We have to hit those streets and get everyone registered and FIRED up about this election. There is no time like the present to get involved.
Though long winded and riddled with political stuff, that was my thought of the day!
Have an active and attentive day!!
