Democrats are devastated. The red Republican "tidal wave" came through and wiped away all hopes of Democratic dominance. For some this is a sad day, which is understandable, losing never feels good. But this is not the worst thing for the Democratic Party. Here is why:
I am a supporter of President Barack Obama, his agenda and his audacity of hope. I believe the policies he has put in place will move this country in the right direction. I appreciate the "little" things that he has done in the last two years that have not received the media attention that healthcare received (I appreciate healthcare reform too BTW). I respect Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the Democrats in the House and Senate who attempted to do what Republicans before them have executed so well - pushing through their agenda regardless of the opposition. There is just one problem that Democrats always have, they never ever have the balls to go as far off the charts of sanity and truth to get what they want done. There in lies the difference. That is the reason why there was a sweeping "tidal wave" of Repubs into the house, because they always know how to control the message, stay on that message no matter what and do or say just about anything to convince their constituents/supporters they are right. Bleeding heart liberals always think people will know what is right because...well...its right. That is how they shoot themselves in the foot EVERY TIME! Democrats need to toughen up and stand up on what they believe in and the great work they have done in the last two years. Democrats need to support the President in his endeavors and draw him back when he goes off track. Democrats need to take a page from the repub book, stand on your principles - firm and unwavering. To this day George Bush will not admit that he sent this country into war under false pretenses. What he did borderlines on treason, but to this day, he will stand on that idea that he did what was best. ( I wouldn't suggest dems go that far but you get my drift) George Bush sent this country to war with NO idea how we would pay for it. Now repubs want to cut spending. (Lets check the tab of that War we had no business getting into and President Obama is getting us out of) It is hypocrisy at the highest level. When the repub President did what he felt he needed to do without regard for budget he was a patriot. When a dem President does what he feels is right without worrying about balancing the budget, he is a socialist/communist/wasteful spender, etc. But Americans also get amnesia, since after the lies of 9/11 George Bush was elected to second term. I still cant believe that one. But repubs control the message and made people believe that the re election of GW in 2004 had nothing to do with that whole lying about war thing and it was really about Gay marriage. Half the country decides war is one thing but you cant dare let Gays get married and POOF - GW goes back for a second term. You have to give the repubs credit for managing the message and playing on the stupidity that is most Americans.
Bill Maher said it perfectly on election day, if you are not a billionaire you have no business voting for the republican party. I will take it down a little by saying if you aren't even moderately wealthy/well off/rich then the policies that the current group of Republicans seek to implement will not help you or anyone you know. And since this is about the economy, then nothing the republicans say about cutting taxes will create jobs. On the flip side, nothing about spending money in government will create jobs. Both parties have that one wrong! Jobs will be created whenever the private sector decides to take away from some of their profit in order to provide jobs. Nothing cutting taxes or government spending will do about that. Also the economy goes in cycles. I just don't know why Barack Obama jumped in during this cycle, it will surely make his job that much harder.
But to the topic at hand, swapping control of the house. This isn't such a bad thing. With the Democrats in control of everything, nothing got done. And when you are in charge and nothing gets done, it ALWAYS looks like its your fault. That tactic was thought of and well executed by Repubs from Jan 20th on. They decided on that cold day in January that they would do everything to make sure nothing got done. (That isn't an assumption or opinion, top repubs were quoted as saying just that) So this win last night was a score 1 for the repubs for putting together a plan and executing it flawlessly. Now for two more years, everything that does or does not get done in congress will lay at the feet of repubs who have decided that they will not work with the President on anything that is not "constitutionally sound governance." Translation, if the President doesn't go along with what they say, they wont work with him. That is a tough approach. And I am quite baffled by the fact that these people think they can just bully this specific President his way. But I digress... Every two years for the last 6 years the tide has turned from one party to the other. The reason for this could be among other things, the impatience of the American people. So republican control of the Congress now can be a good thing. Judging the flightiness (and stupidity) of the American people, by 2012 President Obama and the Democrats may just be riding the blue "tidal wave" right back into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
This bleeding heart liberal is surely counting on it!
