I am confused about something that I read today. I read an article today which described the rate which poverty is occurring in the Black community will lead to about 50% of all black children growing up living in what is classified as poverty. So before I got all up in arms, I needed to do some research. How is this possible? How could it be that every other black child will grow up in poverty?
My research led me to a few things, first of all, the poverty line in America as of 2008 for a family of four including two children is a family living at or under $21k annual income. Lets calculate what that means. $21,000 a year in income is the equivalent to making $10 an hour working a 40 hour work week. For arguments sake, lets not consider paying taxes because usually people in this situation can claim exemptions and are not required to pay as much in income tax. Second, one third of black children are currently living under this poverty line. Third, the poverty line is a source of great controversy due to how it is computed. It doesn't take into account any other source of income beside the income from working. As we know, there are other sources of income that sustain a family. If the rent or household cost is being covered by another source, which is not considered income for the family. But with the cost of house being the greatest cost to a family , not having that cost can making living of $21k annually considerably more feasible.
So with the few facts I found through a quick Internet search, my questions expanded. Is it that this high level of black children are really living in poverty or is the way poverty is calculated affected the black community disproportionately? What are we doing wrong as a people that 1 in 3 of our children are living in poverty? And what can we do to fix this? I am ALARMED by this. What is going wrong here?
